How to draw a cartoon face I

When drawing a cartoon face there are no limits – you can draw it with enormous ears, huge eyes, baby size nose, and whatever weird characteristics you can imagine. It’s a cartoon, and it’s your cartoon – you can do it with absolute freedom.

However, in order for the common viewer to understand that your piece of art is actually a face, there are a few basics you should know before creating your cartoon head. The guidelines for each cartoonist can variate, but basically we all use similar basics.

In this part I’ll be showing you the step by ‘guidelines drawing method’, step by step. We’ll be using several sets of guidelines, so to make it easier each set of guidelines will get it’s own color.

The final cartoon face we’ll be drawing is this:

face parts 6

Let’s start – As the ordinary human face, the cartoon face is basically oval. Draw an oval shape. Now add 3 guidelines – one vertical in the middle of the head, and 2 horizontal which divides the oval shape into 3 horizontal parts, as follows:

face parts 1

Notice that my guidelines aren’t straight – they are just a bit curved, drawn as if the oval shape has volume. In the middle between the 2 horizontal guidelines draw a nose. It should begin and end exactly on the vertical guideline - This is the middle of the face.

On the side of the head draw an ear. In my illustration there’s only 1 ear, since the face i’m drawing turnes to its right.

Add some more guidelines - for the eyes and eyebrows. Draw the eyebrows guideline in the lower third above the highest guideline we drew before (the orangeguidelines). Draw the eyes guidelines somewhere in the middle between the 2 orangeguidelines.  The pupils guideline can be anywhere you want within the eyes area.
Add the eyes and eyebrows, as well as the pupils, as seen in the following image.

  • Notice that the guidelines help you draw with the right perspective – the ‘farther’ eye is smaller than the ‘closer’ eye, just like they appear in real life!

Divide the lower part of the face (below the lower orange horizontal guideline) to 3 parts, using 2 new guidelines. The mouth should be on the higher one, and if you’re interesting in adding a strong chin, it should be on or below the lower blue guideline.

Now add hair. Use can use previous tutorials for cartoon guys’ hair drawing and cartoon girls’ hair drawing.

When finished, remove all guidelines. If needed, go over the outlines of the face again, and that’s it. Drawing a cartoon face is easy, isn’t it?
